prenatal yoga

Today we are fortunate to have Amanda, owner of Little Lotus Yoga, on the blog! Amanda has three children under 6 and has been running Little Lotus for 12 years in Ottawa. She is a savvy businesswoman and often works with small business owners to help them reach higher heights. Today she tells us about the benefits of prenatal yoga.

As expectant parents we spend a lot of time walking through the aisles of our local bookstores thumbing through all the books to see which ones we need to buy. We read website after website and blog and after blog to absorb every parenting tip (good and bad!) and creating lists of things we feel we need to buy for our sweet baby.

I have been there, I bought all the books (some are still unread!), I scoured the web for every tip and I joined all the mom groups. The best thing I did when I was expecting our first child? Was to prepare mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually for the labour I hoped for and to birth my baby into a world full of love.

Prenatal Yoga

Prenatal Yoga is accessible to all individuals no matter what stage of pregnancy you are in. Whether you are having a singleton or twins, if you have complications or not. Did you know that there are still many yoga techniques that you can incorporate into your lifestyle even on bedrest? Have some questions and not sure if yoga is for you? Check out some of our FAQs here.

Benefits of Prenatal Yoga

So what really will prenatal yoga do for you and why should you try it out?

**Ease symptoms such as morning sickness, backaches, shortness of breathe and fatigue in a safe manner. Yoga can also help reduce leg swelling and insomnia!

**Celebrate the life of your child in a calming way that centers your mind, body and spirit.

**Prepare your body for the adjustments and adaptations the body will make throughout the pregnancy.

** Take time out for yourself! We get so busy at work, other family events and preparing for the birth of our child that we sometimes forget about ourselves. Celebrate YOU!

**Meet women who are pregnant and preparing for their birth, just like you! Who knows, you may just make a new best friend or have future playdates for your little one.

**Become more in tune with your body. Individuals who understand their body have found the pushing process of labour can go faster. When your mind can connect with your body you are better able to understand what your body needs and when.

**Maintaining an active lifestyle during pregnancy can create a faster postpartum recovery.

**Certain postures, like downward dog can encourage strength through the body, a complete stretch through the entire back line of your body and increase blood supply to your brain!

**Learn hands on techniques that will be helpful during labour! Coping strategies, including breathing, movement and guided meditation, are taught in all classes.

Little Lotus Yoga offers Prenatal, Postnatal and Children’s yoga classes across Ottawa/Gatineau and offers teacher training programs in the Ottawa and Montreal area. Little Lotus also offers a Prepare For Birth With Yoga workshop that is a great add on to your traditional childbirth classes or a great alternative for those looking for something a little different. This is a hands on workshop that will cover the topics you need to know for birth and beyond and gives you hands on techniques to practice before your big day!

There are so many benefits of prenatal yoga. We love that it’s accessible to everyone through adaptions. Thank you, Amanda!
