Andria is a mom of 4, a busy doula and business owner. She is an invaluable member of our NCD team, providing postpartum and birth care, along with babywearing and infant feeding education. Andria’s journey as a doula began with postpartum care. She shares what postpartum doulas are and how we help new families in Ottawa?
I started working as a postpartum doula in 2013. I took my training because I was looking for help after the birth of my third baby. I knew what a birth doula was, but I had never heard of a postpartum doula. After reading about it I knew immediately that’s what we could have used, but also knew that’s what I wanted to do. Give other new families the support I needed.
So what do we do? We support the new family so parents can feel confident and not have to struggle with the small stuff while finding their feet. We offer day time and also overnight support, with various shift lengths. A doula will help with learning about your baby, feeding, bathing, diapers, and gear. Postpartum doulas will share current evidence based information so you can find your parenting style. We also help with small stuff like laundry, meal prep, dishes, and shopping. I have also gone to appointments with clients, as well as watched baby so parents could run out to shop, the gym, and to appointments. Baby care is a huge part of it – things like eating, showering, and going to the bathroom become difficult tasks, but with us there parents can slow down and take care of their own needs. We are also very knowledgeable in infants and infant care. We can help with normalising behaviour and sleep patterns, fussiness, gas and how to read and understand your baby’s cues.
Every new family I help I learn something, and I am grateful to be with them on their road into parenthood. We have very busy lives and often don’t have family around, or may have an unsupportive family. Welcoming a new baby home is exciting and amazing, also very hard and a huge change. Sometimes we need to create our own village. Having support in the postpartum period is vital, we aren’t meant to do it alone!
