World Doula Week

World Doula Week is celebrated March 22-28 every year. From the World Doula Week website:

The purpose of World Doula Week is to empower doulas all over the world to improve the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns and families in birth and in the postpartum period.

We work every day with women and their families, both prenatally and after baby is born. Whether it’s providing information and resources, a comforting word, or help with practical household chores, we love what we do. We feel like we’re helping one family at a time.

World Doula Week

The three of us – Amie, Danielle and Kamerine – all got our start as birth doulas. Collectively we have attended hundreds of births and so enjoy this aspect of our jobs. There is nothing quite like watching a baby take its first breath and witnessing a woman become a mother.

This past week has been full of camaraderie and celebration. The doula community is full of really wonderful people, both here in Ottawa and online. Doula work can be isolating and lonely but support is only a phone call or a click away.

What is a birth doula?

Doulas can be either birth or postpartum (or both!) which means that they attend births or they attend to the new family. All of the doulas at National Capital Doulas are both birth and postpartum doulas. We all attend births and we all work with new families after baby is born.

There are always questions about what doulas do. There is a vibrant doula community in Ottawa who got together and made a video all about birth doulas to answer those questions. Enjoy!

Hopefully after watching the video, you know more about birth doulas and what we do. A very happy World Doula Week to all of our doula friends in Ottawa and around the world!
