5 free activities for Ottawa families
Baby, it’s cold outside! Winter is here, the days are short, and all you want to do is stay in pjs, snuggle up, and watch movies all day. We all know that getting out of the house is more important than ever, especially if you have young kids at home. Here are some activities to get you and the kids out of the house this winter. Bonus: they’re all FREE!
There are lots of indoor playgroups around the city but we really love the ones offered by Tiny Hoppers. Free and informal, these playgroups are great for getting out of the house. You’ll enjoy chatting with other parents and your child will love climbing, playing, dancing and singing.
The library branches run programming for kids of all ages: babytime, toddlertime and story time. Some of our favourite locations are the Greenboro, Manotick, and Beaverbrook branches. Jump start your child’s love of reading. Check out the website because some classes require registration.
IKEA has Smaland, where potty-trained kids can play while you shop. Go with a friend, grab a coffee and check out the Swedish decor while your kids play. Bonus: the Ottawa location is so big you’ll burn lots of calories walking around.
Having fun as a family is crucial so why not lace up your skates and go public skating? Thanks to a sponsorship deal, public skating is free this winter at Ottawa-area arenas. Skating is a great skill and so quintessentially Canadian. Don’t forget your helmet!
If you have friends with kids the same age, invite them over. There’s nothing quite like seeing your kids play with your friends’ kids. Sipping coffee and chatting with other parents is good for the soul. The kids will be worn out from all the excitement.
So get out!
It’s easy to stay inside during the winter months but getting out is so important. Hopefully these activities give you some ideas for the long, cold Ottawa winter.
